Unit 15 -

We are all addicts: We are addicted to the new; to consuming more; to the myth of progress; to celebrity; to cheap credit; to cosmetic surgery; to fast cars; to lifestyle magazines; to make-over shows; to reality TV; to self harm; to nostalgia; to dieting; to the myth of authenticity; to the ‘new’; to binge drinking; to search engines; to designer living; to home ownership; to social networking websites; to video and image sharing; to gambling; to gossip; to mobile phones; to pornography; to being really deep and meaningful yeah; to cults; to preserving and nurturing our inner child; to CCTV; to video games; to paranoia; to supersizing; to the cultural logic of late capitalism; to those objet d’art must-haves as dictated by certain magazines; to recreational drugs; to prescription drugs; to fashionable diets; to decadence; to tradition: to lists of our addictions; to obtaining an impossible body image; to gambling; to fossil fuel: to voyeurism; to over eating; to cheap air travel; to thinking that our choice of interior furnishings is a signifier of a wider set of taste preferences that mark us out as being special and unique; to thinking that we are special and unique; to caffeine, to software upgrades; to plan section and elevation; to desiring desire; to self-help books that encourage us to make the most of our hidden talents and achieve those goals that will give us the life we have always wanted and deserved, to gadgets; to thinking that everyone else except us is addicted to all of the above; to caring; to not caring; to new taste experiences; to fear of global catastrophe; to the inertia that stops us actually doing anything about global catastrophe; but most of all we are addicted to addiction itself, we are dependency dependent!
